After the Cultural Revolution had come and gone, most of his friends were dead. One after the other, Shi Zhecun remembered them in prose, in a style moving and restrained. Written in 1979, 1983 and 1986, Shi Zhecun's essays of reminiscence are portraits of intellectuals from the Republic of China who had made history, and who were swallowed up by history's waves.
